Histórico puerto que se dice fue fundado por la civilización marinera de Fenicia en el año 1200 AC. A través de su historia ha permanecido como la ciudad portuaria más importante del norte de África. Su laberíntico centro histórico, la Kasbah, fue diseñado como una fortaleza por el imperio Otomano en el siglo 16. Es considerado Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad por UNESCO.
